You won't believe the Guinness World Record title Riyadh Metro just won

Riyadh Metro earns Guinness World Record for the longest driverless train network

It’s official – Riyadh Metro has recently earned a spot in the Guinness World Records as the world’s longest fully automated, driverless metro network, spanning an impressive 176 kilometres.

More than just setting a record, this achievement underscores the Royal Commission for Riyadh City’s ongoing programme to expand smart and sustainable transport infrastructure, in line with broader mobility and urban development goals set out under Saudi Vision 2030.

Riyadh Metro earns Guinness World Record

As a core component of Riyadh’s public transport project, the Metro features six seamlessly integrated lines and 85 stations, linking neighbourhoods, business hubs, government facilities, cultural hotspots and key educational and commercial areas across the capital.

What makes it truly advanced is its driverless technology, with all routes orchestrated by state-of-the-art central control centres that ensure precise monitoring and compliance with the highest safety and quality standards.‎

Riding the Riyadh Metro isn’t just about getting from A to B; it’s a glimpse into Saudi Arabia’s rapid progress in modern transportation.

And the impact extends beyond convenience. Integrated with Riyadh’s broader public transport network, including the bus services, the Metro aims to help reduce traffic congestion across the city, strengthen the ‎local economy, and enhance the city’s urban, social, and environmental landscape.

It is a transit system designed for efficiency and community well-being, improving mobility and accessibility for residents, commuters, and visitors alike.‎

New Riyadh Metro rules and violations

Whether you’re commuting for work, exploring the city, or just enjoying the ride, the Riyadh Metro is not just a means of transportation, but it is also quick, affordable, and does a good job of covering the city.

The six colour-coded lines are:

  • Blue Line (Line 1): Al-Olaya to Al-Batha (38km)
  • Red Line (Line 2): King Abdullah Road (25.3km)
  • Orange Line (Line 3): Al Madina Al Monawara to Prince Saad bin Abdul Rahman Al Awal Road (40.7km)
  • Yellow Line (Line 4): King Khalid International Airport (29.6km)
  • Green Line (Line 5): King Abdulaziz Road Axis (12.9km)
  • Purple Line (Line 6): Abdulrahman Bin Aouf Road to Sheikh Hassan bin Hussain bin Ali Road (30km)

The Blue Line (Line 1) has emerged as the most popular route in the Riyadh Metro network. Having carried nearly 10 million passengers, its popularity stems from its route through the heart of the city, connecting major commercial and financial districts, such as the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD), with the busy central areas of Al-Olaya and Al-Batha.

It comes as no surprise, then, that the buzziest station so far is KAFD, which functions as a major hub for line switching. The station, situated on the eastern side of KAFD, serves as a centre for the blue, yellow, and purple lines.

You can purchase Metro tickets by selecting routes and destinations using the Darb app, available on both iOS and Android in English and Arabic. Alternatively, tickets can be bought at ticket machines at the stations or by tapping your credit card at the stations.
