Get your chicken and waffles fix at these 3 restaurants in Riyadh

Where to eat the Southern American comfort food…

Chicken and waffles may seem to be a bizarre combo to some. However, the delish duo – traditionally made up of fluffy waffles and crunchy buttermilk fried chicken – is the perfect sweet-savoury combination and best eaten with lashings of sweet maple syrup.

We may not have the ever-popular American chain Roscoe’s House of Chicken ‘n Waffles here in Riyadh, but we sure do have a couple of spots that dish out this ultimate soul food. Check them out…

Buttermilk

Sinful Southern treats are aplenty at Buttermilk, including cornbread, buttermilk biscuits, shrimp and grits, and the house’s speciality of juicy fried chicken served atop thick waffles. What’s not to like? Buttermilk has also recently relocated to the An Nakheel district. The fact that it now features its own Buttermilk Bakery, making fresh bread, pies and other pastries in-house, is already a pull factor.

Buttermilk, 2154 Abdulwahid Ibn Ahmad, An Nakheel, Riyadh 12385, Bakery: Sat to Thurs 10am to 4pm & Fri 1pm to 4pm, Dinner service: Sun to Wed 6pm to midnight & Thurs to Sat 5pm to 12.30am. Tel: 055 627 9170. @buttermilk.sa

David Burke Restaurant

David Burke chicken waffles

Opened in April this year to much fanfare, the restaurant’s buttermilk fried chicken and waffle trumps the menu of Chef David Burke’s modern American cuisine. Here, you get huge pieces of crunchy chicken that come with watermelon jam, all sitting on a whole cheddar cheese waffle. Even if the waffle itself was not a star, the chicken we had was good enough to make this dish utterly irresistible. Not only was the marinate spot-on, but the cook on the chicken was so perfect, leaving the chicken still crisp and juicy when we bit into it.

David Burke KSA, Riyadh Front, Riyadh 11564, Sat to Wed 1pm to midnight & Thurs to Fri 1pm to 1am. Tel: 050 062 0101. @davidburkeksa

At Rococoa, the classic southern fare gets turned into a fun, bite-sized dish – the chicken waffle sliders. You’ll be treated to a tender fried chicken breast with apple cider coleslaw and placed in between two mini waffles, which have just the right amount of light crisp and are not overly dense. Oh, and it also comes with fries.

Rococoa, Waseel Centre, Khalid Ibn Al Walid St, Al Hamra, Riyadh 11564, daily 1pm to 11.30pm. Tel: 055 019 4509. @rococoa_sa
