Founded by the Formula One Group, the championship is a spec series, which is a racing series where every driver races with the exact same car. Each driver competes with an identical Tatuus F4-T421 chassis and tire compounds developed by Pirelli.

The F1 Academy held its first-ever season in 2023, and the winner, Marta García, received a fully funded seat in the 2024 FRECA Championship courtesy of F1 Academy, PREMA Racing, Tatuus and Pirelli.

The championship’s roots date back to 2004, when Formula Woman was established due to the lack of female drivers in other series. Then, on November 18, 2022, Formula One announced the launch of F1 Academy, a women’s racing series, with the goal of training and equipping female drivers for advancement to higher levels of the series. It was designed to make the switch from karting to the single-seater ladder easier.

ART Grand Prix, Campos Racing, Rodin Motorsport, MP Motorsport, and Prema Racing are the five teams currently competing in F1 Academy. This year, Hitech Grand Prix will become the sixth team to compete in the series.
