Saudi Arabia launches food delivery robots
The new program is currently in its pilot phase
In an all-new tech-forward move, Saudi Arabia has just launched its first autonomous food delivery service, which has been launched in the ROSHN Front’s Business Area in Riyadh. This is what you need to know about the food delivery robots in Saudi Arabia.
After a partnership was signed between housing developer ROSHN Group and delivery app Jahez, the initial stage of the launch saw five autonomous robots operating within ROSHN Front’s Business Area during working hours, per Arab News.
The service aims to decrease delivery times in addition to lowering carbon emissions and is licensed by the Kingdom’s Transport General Authority.
The five robots have begun operating this week and will deliver food orders from nearby restaurants between 9am and 5pm. The robots are each equipped with over 20 sensors and six cameras to ensure safe and precise navigation. Being tailor-made for the Kingdom, the robots also have additional cooling systems. The food delivery robots in Saudi Arabia operate via GPS.
The robots can handle most tasks without human intervention. If they are in areas that either have a lot of foot traffic or require assistance in general, the engineers at Jahez have said that the robots can communicate with nearby pedestrians by saying “I need help” and “Hello.” The robots are also equipped with suspension that can help them navigate bumpy roads.
The move comes after self-driving taxis were introduced in the Kingdom just late last month. The project will operate in real-life settings across seven key areas in Riyadh, including Terminals 2 and 5 at King Khalid International Airport, Roshn Business Front, Princess Nourah University, the North Train Station, and the Transport General Authority’s headquarters. A total of 13 pickup and drop-off points have been designated.
