King Abdullah Financial District is getting its own monorail
These are the updates
After a successful launch of our glorious Riyadh Metro, the King Abdullah Financial District monorail project is all set to resume, according to Al Eqtisadiah. Here’s everything we know about the King Abdullah Financial District monorail.
The project is currently still in its design phase, with construction expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.
First announced back in October last year, the King Abdullah Financial District Development and Management Company (KAFD) monorail project was signed with a consortium of CRRC, CRRC Nanjing Puzhen, and Hassan Allam.
Trial operation tests are scheduled to begin in early 2027, in preparation for the system to be operational and open to the public before the end of the same year.
If current designs and project requirements are anything to go by, the train’s capacity is expected to reach approximately 3,500 passengers per hour.
The project spotlights the importance of supporting smart and sustainable transportation systems within the King Abdullah Financial District to enable easy movement of employees and visitors. The project aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 to create more connected and efficient cities.
According to Systra, a multinational engineering and consulting group in the mobility sector, the 3.6 km-long monorail will feature driverless autopilot operation and have a single circular elevated track, six elevated stations, and six trains with two carriages each.
The tracks will wind between the main towers of the district, and the system will be further connected to the Riyadh Metro, too.
