Riyadh ranks among world’s most affordable cities for dining out

We’re on the lucky list

As in any other big city in the world, eating out in Riyadh is so much easier than cooking your own food (guilty, you should see my spending history). And now we know why. Riyadh has actually just ranked among the world’s most affordable cities for dining out.

In a new global study by Chef’s Pencil, which compares the cost of dining out and coffee costs across 177 cities worldwide relative to local salaries, Riyadh now ranks within the top 30 of the world’s most affordable cities for dining out, placing it just outside the elite global “one per cent club” for restaurant affordability.

Coming in hot at number 28, the shiny capital’s meal-to-salary ratio is currently at 1.10 per cent, while the average salary is SAR9,375.63. What that means is that a three-course meal at a mid-range restaurant costs only 1.1 per cent of the average monthly salary (SAR101.26), placing it among the most affordable cities for cheap eats.

On the coffee index, Riyadh ranks 90th, with daily coffee costs amounting to 4.9 per cent of the monthly salary of SAR9,375.63, with each cappuccino costing around USD5 (SAR18.75).

The study was done by Chef’s Pencil, which is an international food magazine that was launched in 2009. The magazine regularly covers food industry trends and news.
