For the first time ever, Wicked the Musical is coming to Riyadh

Big day for theatre enthusiasts

Musicals, normal ones at least, are not my cup of tea. Before you click off, I should mention that Wicked the Musical is most definitely not a normal musical. I’ll explain what I mean by the end of this article, but for now, let’s get ready for Wicked the Musical in Riyadh.

Happening from December 3 until December 20, Wicked the Musical in Riyadh will be taking over the King Fahad Cultural Centre, and tickets are actually out now.

A true global phenomenon like no other, Wicked is actually the first musical movie I’ve watched in years, but when Ariana Grande plays a character as iconic as Glinda, you simply have to watch it on the big screen (my friends made their case, and having watched it, I have to agree).

Wicked the Musical began with Stephen Schwartz discovering Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West while on vacation, and saw the potential to create a major dramatic adaptation, and the rest is true, magical history.

The story

The plot revolves around two witches, Elphaba and Glinda, both before and after Dorothy Gale arrived in Oz. The musical focuses on the complicated friendship between Elphaba (who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (who becomes Glinda the Good). Wicked showcases how the friendship is tested by their differing personalities, conflicting opinions, a mutual love interest, the corrupt rule of the Wizard of Oz, and ultimately, and heartbreakingly, Elphaba’s tragic fall from grace.

The musical is based on a book by Winnie Holzman and the novel by Gregory Maguire. The music and lyrics are done by the iconic Stephen Schwartz.
