In-person university and school classes will be suspended in Riyadh on Monday

The news comes after a weather alert was issued in the capital

It has just been announced that in-person university and school classes will be suspended on Monday December 14, as adverse weather conditions are expected in the capital based on reports from the National Centre for Meteorology. This is what we know about the no in-person university and school classes in Riyadh.

Educational authorities have announced that all schools will transition to remote classes as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

According to the official announcement, all public and private schools in Riyadh, Al-Majmaah, Al-Ghat, Al-Zulfi, Al-Dawadmi, Al-Quwayiyah, Afif, and Shaqra will conduct classes remotely through the Madrasati platform and other approved educational systems per Saudi Gazette. The decision applies to all students as well as teaching and administrative staff.

The announcement comes after the National Centre for Meteorology warned of increased chances of rainfall of varying intensity across most regions of the Kingdom until Thursday.

Some forecasts indicated that the weather may be accompanied by strong downdraft winds exceeding 60 kilometres per hour, hailstorms, high sea waves in coastal areas, and possible flash floods in some locations.

Education authorities from several other cities have also taken similar precautionary measures, i.e., choosing remote classes over in-person ones in the best interest of students and staff. These include Eastern Province, Hafar Al-Batin, Qassim, Al-Ahsa, and Al-Baha.

Authorities have now urged students, parents, and school staff to follow official weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines.

The last weather alert

Just last week, the National Centre for Meteorology forecasted moderate to heavy thunderstorms, capable of triggering flash floods and accompanied by hail and strong winds, for the country, according to Gulf News. Areas like Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Qassim, the Eastern Province, and the Northern Borders were placed on alert.

Parts of Tabuk, Hail, and Al Jouf, as well as the Kingdom’s southwestern highlands, were also expected to get some light to moderate rain, and some other regions may also experience patches of fog.
