A Riyadh Metro Red Line expansion plan has been revealed

The line will have five new stations

Metro announcements seem to be the highlight this month, with Jeddah’s very own version starting up again soon, new passes, and, for our focus today, the Riyadh Metro Red Line expansion.

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City announced the award of the project to design and construct the Riyadh Metro Red Line expansion, extending the existing line by 8.4 kilometres.

The extension will run from King Saud University to the Diriyah Gate Development project, and, as mentioned, will include five new stations. The expansion plan has been announced as part of the efforts to complete the capital’s public transport network and enhance connectivity between vital areas, residential communities, and educational, cultural, and healthcare centres.

The Riyadh Metro became fully functional earlier this year with six colour-coded lines, which include yellow, red, orange, purple, blue, and yellow. Recently, the Riyadh Metro has earned a spot in the Guinness World Records as the world’s longest fully automated, driverless metro network, spanning an impressive 176 kilometers.

What to look forward to

The new extension includes the construction of 7.1 kilometres of deep underground tunnels, 1.3 kilometres of elevated tracks, and new stations. Two stations will be located at King Saud University, with one serving the medical city and health colleges and the other serving the university concourse. Three additional stations will be located in Diriyah, including one planned as a future interchange with Line 7. The project is expected to be completed in approximately six years’ time.

There’s also a new line coming

While you’re here, we also have a new Riyadh Metro line coming soon. The project involves constructing a metro line linking Qiddiya Entertainment City, King Abdullah International Gardens, King Salman Park, Misk City and Diriyah Gate. The total length of the line will be about 65 kilometres, of which 47 kilometres will be underground, while 19 kilometres will be above ground. Line 7 will have 19 stations, 14 of which will be built underground and five overground, and is scheduled to enter its initial implementation phase in 2026.
