Riyadh has big plans to be one of the most, if not the most, futuristic cities in the world as part of Vision 2030. And to make it a point, Saudi Arabia is bidding to host Expo 2030, a six-month, global World Expo to be hosted in 2030 in Riyadh.
The bid, officially titled Riyadh Expo 2030 plans to host the massive event from 1 October 2030 and 31 March, 2031.

And the reception for the 179 member states of the International Bureau of Expositions was held last night on 19 June 2023. His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City boosted Saudi Arabia’s bid by attending. The reception was held to showcase the capital’s readiness, plans and projects come Expo 2030.
Planned to be hosted under the theme “Together for a Foresighted Tomorrow,” the theme has three main pillars: A Different Tomorrow, Climate Action, and Prosperity for All. The official vote deciding the host city is set to happen at the next General Assembly in November 2023.
So…what’s the deal?
Earlier this year, representatives from the BIE concluded a five-day inquiry on the ground in Riyadh, evaluating the city’s credentials as a World Expo host city. During their trip, the BIE Enquiry Mission explored the technical aspects of the Kingdom’s candidacy, attended workshops, and met with Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman Bin Abdulaziz, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Royal Commission of Riyadh City (RCRC).
The overall vibe of the visit was positive, with Mr. Patrick Specht, Chairperson of the Enquiry Mission and President of the BIE Administration and Budget Committee reflecting on their visit, “We were shown what the country is capable of, and the country and the city have everything we asked about.”
