Notice a smoother traffic flow from north to south of Riyadh? Here’s why

Opened to motorists since last weekend, the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Tunnel in Riyadh aims to enhance traffic flow and alleviate congestion…

It’s a long shot, but the King Salman Park Foundation Board of Directors has made a herculean effort to tunnel their way through the completion of the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Tunnel construction.

The tunnel is one of several underpasses and bridges being constructed as part of the larger King Salman Park project in Riyadh. It will facilitate the smooth movement of traffic, ease congestion, and link the various elements of the King Salman Park project by connecting the old with newly constructed tunnels.

Buckle up and tunnel through Riyadh’s longest tunnel

Marking the first tunnel to be completed since the project’s inception in 2021, the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Tunnel stretches 2,430-metre long – from north to south of Riyadh – beneath the King Salman Park project.

It is also one of the longest tunnels in the Middle East.

Motorists who have tunnelled through to the end of the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Road Tunnel in the daytime may have also noticed its modern design. Think Salmani architecture that blends seamlessly with Riyadh’s natural rock formations and geological structure.

Constructed with sustainable materials, the Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Road Tunnel has three wide lanes for vehicles in each direction and a designated emergency lane. The tunnel is also equipped with advanced traffic management systems, the latest safety and security measures, as well as emergency services and evacuation routes.

Work is currently underway on two additional tunnels on Al-Oruba Road. It will comprise a new 1,590-metre-long tunnel, connecting with the existing 840-metre tunnel along Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq Road to create a unified underpass that promises to streamline traffic movement.
