Major heatwave in Saudi Arabia: here's what to know

Stay safe (and more importantly, hydrated)

This week, a heat wave will be sweeping its way across central and eastern Saudi Arabia, with expected temperatures to hit 50 degrees Celsius and possibly higher. This is everything we know about the major heatwave in Saudi Arabia.

The extreme weather conditions are expected to continue until the end of the week, according to the National Centre for Meteorology.

According to Gulf News, key cities including Dammam, Al Ahsa, and Khobar will be impacted. Currently, forecasters are predicting highs ranging between 48 degrees Celsius and 50 degrees Celsius.

Riyadh will also be seeing an intense rise in temperatures during the heatwave in Saudi Arabia. Temperatures are expected to be between 45 degrees Celsius and 47 degrees Celsius, placing the capital within what is being described as “half-boiling” conditions (and that’s just what it feels like too).

Citizens are urged to exercise additional caution, particularly during peak weather times of the day. It is recommended that those who are at risk, such as the elderly, small children, and people with long-term medical conditions, stay indoors as much as possible, drink enough water, and avoid direct sun exposure.

According to the Saudi Press Agency’s weather report, dust-stirring winds will blow in parts of the Eastern Province, Riyadh, Najran, Madinah, and Makkah regions. While visibility will be near zero on the coastal road leading to Jazan. Gusty winds are also expected to blow, and rain and hail may fall in parts of the Jazan, Aseer, and Al-Baha regions.
