New Saudi ride-hailing rules announced with fines going up to SAR20,000
Note these down
The Transport General Authority (TGA) has just announced a new road transport law that strictly prohibits engaging in passenger transport. The new Saudi ride-hailing rules mostly cover passenger transport without a valid license.
According to Saudi Gazette, the new rules also include the practice of calling out to passengers with the intention to provide them transportation, commonly referred to as hailing.
The law states that it’s prohibited for any driver to engage in unauthorised road transport activities, including calling out to passengers, following or intercepting them, gathering in passenger areas, or roaming with the intention of giving them a ride.
The fines begin at SAR11,000, and vehicle impoundment for up to 25 days. Violators risk receiving fines of up to SAR20,000 and vehicle impoundment for up to 60 days, in addition to the possibility of the vehicle being sold at public auction and even the deportation of non-Saudi violators.
The measures come in an effort to curb illegal practices, protect passengers’ rights, ensure service quality, and protect the interests of licensed operators.
Other traffic rules
Traffic-violating expats in Saudi Arabia can be deported if caught committing dangerous driving offences that endanger public safety. The new regulations have been put in place by the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, and the Public Prosecution. The rules are also introducing stricter penalties for repeat offenders. Officials said the amended law clearly defines violations deemed to endanger public safety and outlines procedures for referral to court. Read more here.
