The red weather alert is still active in Riyadh and the Eastern Province

Stay safe out there

While the weather has slowly but surely been getting better here in Riyadh, the red weather alert is currently still active in both the capital and the Eastern Province. This is what we know about the red weather alert in Riyadh and the Eastern Province, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

Updated up to as recently as Wednesday December 16, the red weather alert in Riyadh and the Eastern Province, as well as open areas and highways, includes heavy rain along with accompanying conditions like strong winds, zero horizontal visibility, hail, flash floods, and thunderstorms. The warning is expected to end by Thursday.

The NCM released a digital map outlining the expected duration of the red alert in each region, and the new red alert will be active until 5pm on Thursday, December 18.

Moderate to heavy thunderstorms are expected to continue in parts of the Riyadh, Eastern Province, and Northern Borders regions. Moderate rainfall is also expected in parts of the Tabuk, Al-Jawf, Hail, and Qassim regions, with a chance of fog in some areas.

Light snow and frost are possible in parts of the Tabuk and Hail highlands, as well as in the northeastern parts of the Madinah highlands. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered thunderstorms are expected in the western and southwestern parts of the Kingdom.

Authorities have now urged residents to follow official weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines.

The past two days

Weather conditions in Riyadh and the Eastern Province over the past two days were actually so unstable that the two cities had to turn to remote learning for university and school classes. The move came as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff. All classes were conducted remotely through the Madrasati platform.
