Video games are set to become a part of the Saudi school curriculum

Video games > homework? Video games = homework

If you grew up in Saudi Arabia in the 90s and 2000s, you know video games were a huge part of the bill. And we all somehow wished that we could play them all day long (despite the mounds of homework piling up), and now the Kingdom may be combining the two. Here’s what we know about video games in the Saudi school curriculum.

Savvy Games Group, Saudi Arabia’s own video game investment, development, publishing, and esports company, has signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Ministry of Education and key educational institutions in Saudi Arabia to integrate video games in the Saudi school curriculum. This comes after the country introduced AI to its curriculum last year.

In a move to promote and embed game development and esports across the secondary and tertiary education frameworks in the country, Savvy will be working with the Ministry of Education on incorporating game development into education curricula in coordination with the National Curriculum Centre.

Savvy is also obtaining formal accreditation for the Savvy Academy, adding games to the e-learning platform Madrasati, and supporting talent development through the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Scholarship Program and the Waed Track for scholarships, training programs, and entrepreneurship support.

As part of the MoU with the Ministry of Education, Savvy will also be supporting the nationwide ‘Play to Learn’ game development competition for high school students, designed to spark student interest in developing games and raise awareness on career pathways in the games industry.

That’s not all, though. Savvy has also announced a collaboration with Tatweer Educational Services, a national leader in educational systems and platforms. This partnership will be aimed at incorporating game-based and simulation technologies into the development of interactive educational content, digital learning solutions, and specialised educational content.
