As Saudi Arabia opens its doors to tourists, there’s one destination that’s become synonymous with the kingdom’s bucket-list sights: Al Ula.
The desert outpost, 1,040 kilometres northwest of Riyadh, was part of the ancient Incense Trade Route, connecting the Mediterranean to North Africa and South East Asia.
Up until now, international tourism in Saudi Arabia has been limited, which means these mesmerising sights haven’t been overrun. Even now with tourist visas available, group sizes are being kept to a minimum, so you may just have these incredible scenes all to yourself…

The archaeological site was the first in Saudi Arabia to be added to the Unesco World Heritage List, and it is a must-visit on any trip to the kingdom.
