Some of the best breakfast spots in Riyadh

For those who take their breakfast seriously…

We’re always on the lookout for the best breakfast spots in Riyadh. It is, after all, the most important meal of the day. Here are six of our favourites in the city to start your day off right.

(Given the closure of dine-in services related to the Covid-19 restrictions, we recommend calling ahead to ensure the restaurants listed below are open.)

Breakfast Room

The global touches with Middle Eastern flavours on the menu of this restaurant truly set it apart. Both presentation and flavours impress. A humble shakshuka comes out bursting with bright reds and greens; even the omelette roll served on a bed of croissant, and the avocado toast with creamy scrambled egg are artfully arranged. Also great: the extra-thick and extra-fluffy Japanese pancakes.

Breakfast Room, Prince Turki Ibn Abdulaziz Al Awwal Rd, Hittin, QJ54+9F, daily 9am to 2.30pm. Tel: 050 156 5108. Only pick-up option currently available. @breakfastroom.sa

Flour & Firewood

With a working bakery, you can just be popping out to buy some bread when you head to Flour & Firewood. While you’re there picking up your rye or sourdough, you might as well try something from their incredible breakfast menu. All the egg dishes are spot on. Don’t forget to order their signature French toast, too – it’s fluffy and tender on the inside, gloriously browned on the outside.

Flour & Firewood, 2829 7717 Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Rd, As Sulimaniyah, MPX4+JW, daily 8.30am to 11.30pm, Tel: 053 628 0840. Delivery option available on Jahez application. @flourandfirewood

Ohayou

Only a few places in Riyadh could nail the perfect balance between refined dining and homey quite like Ohayou. The refreshingly creative menu is feel-good, the vibe laid-back, and the split-level interior, which doubles as an art gallery and co-working space, eclectic and interesting – a winner in our books. Our favourites include the Protein & More, comprising sweet potato croquettes with slow-roasted brisket and poached eggs, slathered in hollandaise sauce and topped with crispy kale, and the classic French toast – a behemoth of extra-thick brioche begging to be drenched in syrup.

Ohayou, Prince Turki Bin Abdulaziz Althani St, Hittin, QJ63+CQ, Mon to Sat 7.30am to 11.30pm. Tel: 011 207 7220. Delivery option available on Jahez application. @ohayou_sa

Opla serves an all-day breakfast with a side of sophistication. You’ll find an Insta-worthy and pretty space with a soft colour palette of blush pink, yellow and teal that will make you want to redecorate your living room. You can almost anticipate the menu just by looking at its décor – think refined brunch, simple but delicious. We recommend the avocado and eggs, and the eggs Benedict, which features a plate of beautifully poached runny eggs with smoked salmon, grilled tomatoes and asparagus. For those with a sweet tooth, the Dutch Baby with tart berries is something you can’t miss.

Opla, Mohammad bin Salman, Ar Rabi, QJJW+JX, daily 6am to 5pm. Tel: 055 299 9126. Delivery options available on Jahez and The Chefz applications. @opla_sa

The focus here is on farm-to-table, so expect straightforward yet wholesome ingredients from their organic farm and thoughtful food choices. Whet your appetite with freshly squeezed juice – we recommend the kale, kiwi, mango and banana. Then, settle in for their sandwiches such as The Viking with smoked salmon with dill, rocket, lemon and cream cheese, and The Cowboy of slow-cooked beef cheeks with caramelised onions, coleslaw and lettuce, drizzled with their homemade barbecue sauce. Other favourites include crumbled falafel fattoush salad and the peanut butter acai bowl.

Treehouse Cafe, 3692 Prince Mohammed Ibn Salman Ibn Abdulaziz Rd, Ar Rabi, QJJW+JW, Sun to Thurs 8am to 11pm, Fri & Sat, 11am to midnight. Tel: 055 652 1220. Delivery options available on Jahez and The Chefz applications. @treehousecafe.sa

With its quirky design touches, this quaint spot is a great place to come and enjoy local specialities. Join the snaking queue as you wait in line for some flavoursome feasting. The hummus, foul and falafel are plentiful and receive high praise. On a nice day (and when dining-in services are allowed), request a seat in the courtyard.

Tameesa, King Abdul Aziz Branch Rd, Alyasmin, RJHQ+CP, Sat to Thurs 6am to 2am, Fri 6am to 11am, Tel: 920 023 392. Delivery options available on Hunger Station and To You applications. @tameesa_sa
