Joa brings Japanese-Hawaiian fusion comfort food to Riyadh

Expand your lunch options…

A poké haven may sit in Hittin in the back of beyond, but its fresh Japanese-Hawaiian cuisine delivers a rare gem to the heart of the district in Riyadh.

Enter Joa, a fast-casual concept specialising in fusion poké bowls and sushi rolls. After making waves in Kuwait since 2016, it has now set up a shack on our shores – its first Saudi Arabian branch.

The minimalist indoor space is both refined yet comfortable with wood accents that give off that distinctive Japanese feel.

But it’s the straightforward menu at Joa that hits the mark in its forthright celebration of fresh, high-quality ingredients.

The no-frills joint offers an extensive sushi selection, with options ranging from hosomaki to nigiri and sashimi and enticing appetisers like salmon tataki, spiced honey shrimp and beef crispy rice. The texture-rich crispy rice dishes, including favourites like beef and spicy tuna, provide a delightful culinary contrast, while the assorted salads cater to those who are more health-conscious. Our favourite is the crab avocado salad.

The centrepiece of Joa’s menu, the poké bowls and sushi rolls, are crafted for the adventurous at heart. The most favourable Simply Salmon bowl embodies the essence of culinary simplicity, whereas Tuna on Fire offers a bold flavour profile for the more daring.

You can also look forward to unique creations like the Shrimply Irresistible, a sublime blend of shrimp, tempura and spicy honey mayo.

And vegetarians, there’s a bowl you can indulge in, too. Opt for the Spicy Tofu Poké, which mixes chunks of marinated tofu, mushrooms, edamame and sweet potato doused in its ponzu dressing.

But if you prefer classic flavours like us, the Katsu Poké is a must-try, bringing a comforting familiarity with a twist.

Joa is all you need for a feel-good meal.
