Here’s what to expect when teamLab Borderless Jeddah opens this summer

There will be a lot to see…

Get ready to step into a world of wonders when teamLab Borderless Jeddah opens in the summer of 2024 in the Jeddah Historic District.

Spanning approximately 10,000 square metres, teamLab Borderless Jeddah, the first-ever teamLab Borderless museum to launch in the Middle East, will be permanently established on the shores of Alarbaeen Lagoon, overlooking the panoramic views of Jeddah Historic District, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Here’s everything you need to know about the all-new teamLab Borderless digital art museum in Jeddah when it opens this summer.

What is teamLab Borderless?

teamLab Borderless is a world of artworks without boundaries, a museum without a map created by art collective teamLab. Artworks move out of rooms, communicate with other works, influence, and sometimes intermingle with each other with no boundaries, forming one borderless world. As visitors immerse their body in this borderless art, they are encouraged to wander, explore, and discover by following their curiosities.

What can you expect inside the teamLab Borderless Jeddah?

In short, sensory overload. The immense teamLab Borderless Jeddah will be divided into five zones: Borderless World, Athletics Forest, Future Park, Forest of Lamps, and En Tea House, exhibiting some 80 independent yet intricately interrelated works.

Borderless World

People understand and recognise the world through their bodies, moving freely and forming connections and relationships with others. The body has its own sense of time, and in the mind, boundaries between different thoughts are ambiguous, causing them to influence and, at times, intermingle with each other. The artworks, too, move out of the rooms freely, form connections and relationships with people, and possess the same concept of time as the human body. They communicate with other works, influence each other, and, at times, intermingle. teamLab Borderless is one continuous world without boundaries, created by such a group of artworks. People wander through the world, exploring with intention, creating and discovering a new world with others.

Athletics Forest

teamLab Athletics Forest is a creative, athletic space based on the concept of understanding the world through the body and thinking about the world three-dimensionally. It trains spatial recognition and promotes the growth of the hippocampus of the brain. People immerse their entire body in the complex and physically challenging three-dimensional space of the interactive world.

Future Park

teamLab Future Park is an experimental educational project based on collaborative creation (co-creation). It is an amusement park where people can enjoy creating the world freely with others.

Forest of Lamps

This artwork, in which lamps are seemingly scattered in a random manner, is composed of resonating light that changes based on the relationship between the people in the artwork space. It is a work that expresses the beauty of continuity. When a person stands still close to a lamp, it shines brightly and emits a sound. The light spreads to the two closest lamps, which similarly emit a sound, spreading their light to the lamps nearest to them. The light, now divided into two, will pass through all of the lamps in the room once, creating a single trajectory of light. The light created by your presence and the light created by the presence of others will always intersect.

En Tea House

Even drinking tea can be an art when you are in teamLab Borderless. Here at this tea house, when a cup of tea is made, flowers bloom inside the teacup. When the teacup is lifted, the flower petals scatter and spread outside the cup. Flowers bloom infinitely as long as there is tea. The artwork is created when there is tea in the cup; when the tea is gone, the artwork disappears with it. Tea is a transformative entity, and the amount of tea in the cup will change the size of the tea’s surface. Accordingly, the size of the flower will also change. If tea is spilt from the cup, flowers will also bloom in the spilt liquid.

teamLab Borderless Jeddah is unlike any museum you’ve ever seen – you’ll definitely want to add it to your Jeddah must-see list when it opens this summer.
