Widely known as the world’s longest driverless metro system, the Riyadh Metro aims to provide alternative transportation to reduce reliance on vehicles, thereby reducing traffic and supporting Riyadh’s transformation into a business hub as part of the Kingdom’s economic diversification plans.
The metro will operate fully along three major lines: Al-Olaya and Al-Batha (blue line), King Khalid International Airport Road (yellow line), and the intersection of Abdulrahman Bin Auf Street with Sheikh Hassan Bin Hussein Street (purple line). Meanwhile, the lines along King Abdullah Road (red line) and King Abdulaziz Road (green line) have now launched today (Sunday December 15). The line along Al-Madina Al-Munuwarah Road (orange line) will be launching on Sunday January 5.
According to Arab News, the Red Line is 25.1 km long and runs from east to west along King Abdullah Road, connecting King Fahd Sports City to King Saud University across 15 stations, including the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center.
All six lines will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources. Pass prices and discounted packages for metro riders are expected to be released very soon too.
There will be 84 Riyadh Metro stations in total serving six lines, with four major stations that’ll allow passengers to move between the metro lines and to and from the bus network. These include the Qasr Al Hokm Metro Station, King Abdullah Financial District Station, located on the eastern side of KAFD, Western Station, found in the Al Sweedi district, and the fourth and final main station, the STC Station.
The metro’s launch comes 12 years after the project was first announced, so we definitely can’t wait to see everything it has to offer.
