What is AlUla Manara? Here's everything you need to know

Witness the cosmos up close in AlUla

AlUla is already one of the Kingdom’s top stargazing destinations, thanks to its vast desert landscapes and remarkably clear night skies.

Now, plans for a landmark attraction aim to build on that reputation even further.

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has approved the design of AlUla Manara, a major astronomical observatory and visitor destination set to rise about 70 kilometres north of AlUla.

So, what exactly is AlUla Manara?

Think of it as an architectural marvel that invites visitors to explore the wonders of the cosmos.

The facility will feature a state-of-the-art astronomical observatory, research centre, exhibition spaces and dedicated stargazing areas. It will also include interactive displays, observation platforms and experiences designed to bring the wonders of the universe a little closer to home.

Visitors can also expect replicas of famous satellites and space telescopes, dedicated learning spaces, and plenty of opportunities to simply sit back and admire one of the clearest night skies in the region.

Why is it being built in AlUla?

Quite simply, AlUla has some of the best night skies in the world.

The observatory will sit between the Harrat Uwayrid Reserve and Gharameel, an area known for exceptionally low levels of light pollution. That means clearer skies, brighter stars and ideal conditions for astronomical research.

In fact, preserving those dark skies is a key part of the project. AlUla already has lighting regulations in place to minimise glare and unnecessary light spill, helping to protect both wildlife and the region’s spectacular night-time views.

The design is inspired by AlUla itself

If the renderings are anything to go by, this won’t be your average observatory.

The futuristic design draws inspiration from AlUla’s striking rock formations and natural geology, while locally sourced sandstone will be used across the exterior to help it blend into the surrounding landscape. It’s a building that looks as though it belongs in the desert rather than being dropped into it.

Serious science is happening here, too

While visitors will be able to enjoy incredible stargazing experiences, AlUla Manara is also being built with research in mind.

The observatory will house a four-metre primary telescope alongside two additional two-metre telescopes, making it one of the largest observatories in the world.

The project is being developed in partnership with the Saudi Space Agency, King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, and the SETI Institute.

Why we’re excited

AlUla has never lacked wow factor, but AlUla Manara will offer visitors a whole new way to experience the destination. Rather than looking back at history, this attraction is all about looking towards the stars.

While it is still some way from opening, it’s easy to imagine it becoming one of the Kingdom’s most talked-about attractions. In fact, with voting now open for the What’s On Saudi Arabia Awards 2026, we can’t help but wonder if AlUla Manara could one day be a contender in our brand-new Favourite Attraction category.

Watch this space – quite literally.
