5 years to Vision 2030: How has Saudi Arabia has changed
These are the five most noticeable changes…
It’s no secret that Saudi Arabia has its eyes set on being one of the most forward-thinking, futuristic destinations in the world. And to show its commitment to becoming a nation of the future. And a major part of that is the incredible Vision 2030, which is based on the following three pillars: a vital society, a thriving economy, and an ambitious nation.
With five years to go for its completion, here’s how Saudi Arabia has changed.
Women’s Empowerment

Equality lies at the heart of Vision 2030. The vision seeks to build a vibrant society that offers opportunities to those at all levels of society, including men, women, and the youth. Women’s empowerment is central to the nation’s agenda: economically, socially, and publicly. Following the launch of the Vision, Saudi Arabia has actively championed women as entrepreneurs, leaders and employees. Currently, the participation of Saudi women in the workplace has soared, rising from 20 per cent in 2018 to 34.5 per cent as of August 2024, which is well above the initial 30 per cent target. From the rights to drive and travel to divorce, the status of women has been profoundly altered for the better in the Kingdom.
The future of entertainment
It’s no secret that Saudi Arabia is now home to some of the region’s biggest and most happening festivals. I am, of course, talking about the likes of MDLBEAST’s Soundstorm and Balad Beast, but also cinema launches, fashion shows, and theme parks. Vision 2030 has transformed life and leisure in the Kingdom, repositioning Saudi Arabia as a global hub for entertainment. With year-round entertainment happening thanks to the Saudi Seasons including Riyadh Season, Jeddah Season, and Sharqiyah Season, the country has attracted over 46 million visitors, providing thousands of jobs and bolstering investment.
Sporting events
Hosting sporting events has always been an important aspect of the Saudi Vision 2030 since Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s announcement of the plan in April 2016. Since, then the country has secured a partnership with Dakar Rally, a partnership with the LIV Golf League, Formula 1 for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the development of women’s sports, and most notably, locked in the hosting position for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
Megaprojects
Saudi Arabia is no stranger to some mind-boggling and stunning architectural projects. Across the Kingdom, new developments are paving the way for incredible hotels, world-class leisure destinations and an unforgettable array of experiences as the country edges ever closer to realising the goals of Vision 2030. Saudi Arabia’s most ambitious megaprojects include THE LINE, TROJENA, The Red Sea, Sindalah, and so many more.
Tourism
For the very first time in September 2019, Saudi Arabia opened its doors to the world. The launch of the Kingdom’s tourism visa saw visitors from around the globe flock to explore Saudi Arabia’s ancient history, glorious landscapes, and warm hospitality. More than 300,000 applications were made in the four months following the visa’s introduction, confirming Saudi Arabia as an exciting new travel destination.
