The New Murraba updates you've been waiting for
Several key details have been announced
Riyadh’s been quite the magnet for a lot of developments, and a brand-new one has just been added to the list. The New Murabba Development Company (NMDC) was launched way back in 2023 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Situated north west of Riyadh, the new project can be found at the intersection of King Salman and King Khalid roads, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). The New Murabba project has plans to feature green areas and walking and cycling paths to promote sustainability. Sounds blissful.
Within the development, there will also be an iconic museum, a technology and design university, and a multipurpose immersive theatre. More than 80 entertainment and culture venues will await residents and visitors, too.
The venue will have 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and more than 980,000 square metres of retail space. The area will have its own internal transport system. It will also be conveniently located a 20-minute drive away from King Khalid International Airport.
More things coming
Additionally, the New Murabba Development Company will also develop Mukaab, which is set to be an iconic landmark in the capital. Mukaab will be one of the largest built structures in the world at 400 metres high, 400 metres wide, and 400 metres long. The building will be inspired by Najdi-style architecture.
It’s set to be the world’s first immersive destination where visitors will be able to experience digital and virtual technology with the latest holographs. The landmark will have a tower perched on top of a spiral base and a premium hospitality destination.
There will also be residential and hotel units, commercial spaces, and recreational facilities. It will also be home to a bunch of shops and additional cultural and tourist attractions too.
The new company will be operating under PIF and is set to be completed by 2030 in line with the Saudi Vision 2030.
2025 updates
As of last week, New Murabba Development Company (NMDC) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korea’s Heerim Architects & Planners to explore design works on assets at the 14 square-kilometre New Murabba downtown project, according to MEED. The deal will have a special focus on anchor assets, linear parks, and smart city features.
NMDC also signed an MoU with South Korea’s Naver Cloud Corporation for tech solutions. According to an official statement, “The three-year agreement covers exploring innovative technology and automation to support the delivery of New Murabba, including robotics, autonomous vehicles, a smart city platform, and digital solutions for monitoring construction progress.”
The statement added that the excavation works for The Mukaab, the centrepiece of the overall development, have now been completed.
