Driverless taxis are officially on Riyadh streets now
The future is now
Driverless taxis in Riyadh are officially a thing now, and the Transport General Authority (TGA) has just announced the launch of a new route. The self-driving vehicles will operate daily under direct regulatory and technical supervision, ensuring a safe and innovative mobility experience for users in the capital city.
The new route for driverless vehicles to transport passengers connects Hayat Mall and Riyadh Gallery. The initiative aims to contribute to improving the efficiency of the transport system and enhancing traffic flow.

The TGA stated that the vehicles are equipped with advanced safety and sensing technologies, including sensors, cameras, and intelligent systems that monitor roads and surrounding conditions and respond dynamically to traffic changes, according to Saudi Gazette.
Autonomous, or self-driving, vehicles aim to improve user experience through advanced operational technologies, contribute to building an innovative and sustainable transport ecosystem, and support the integration of modern technologies in the transport sector.
The Authority invited the public to request autonomous vehicles through the Uber app and enjoy a safe, smart, and futuristic transport experience that represents the future of mobility in Saudi Arabia
The road to driverless taxis
Driverless taxis in Riyadh were launched in July last year as a 12-month trial at seven strategic locations across the city, including King Khalid International Airport (Terminals 2 and 5), Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University, the Roshn Business Front, and key connecting highways. A total of 13 designated pick-up and drop-off stations were announced for the pilot, and since then new stations have been added to the list.
This initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aim to establish a smart and sustainable transportation ecosystem. The launch follows the successful completion of a previous phase, during which the vehicles conducted more than 1,700 trips, transported over 3,000 passengers, and covered a total distance exceeding 30,000 kilometres.
