Riyadh's traffic flow is about to get smoother— thanks to this new project

Roadworks ahead

Traffic in Riyadh is a pain on a good day and a nightmare on a bad one. And there are now roadworks happening all over the capital to improve that very problem. Most recently, in the western sector, improvement works are underway for roads and major intersections.

Traffic in Riyadh is about to improve in the Al-Awali District, on Ziad Al-Bahli Road at its intersection with Qais bin Muhsin Road (one of the most congested intersections). This move comes in pursuit of improving the mobility experience between the capital’s neighbourhoods.

Announced by the official account of the Riyadh region via X, formerly Twitter, construction work has already begun on the project, but currently, an end date has not been announced.

Key project contributions

The project will be focused on:

  • Increasing capacity: This will be done by adding three traffic lanes in each direction on Ziyad Al-Bahli Road and Qais bin Muhassan Road.
  • Improving traffic flow: By adding modern traffic signals equipped with the latest technology, aligning with real-time traffic density.
  • Enhancing connectivity efficiency: Between main and secondary roads in the Al-Awali district.

Accompanying development

Alongside the roadwork improvement project, construction works will also include:

  • Asphalt upgrades and quality improvements (enhancing durability, safety, and smoothness)
  • Planning lanes, road markings, and traffic paint
  • Preparing pedestrian walkways and accessibility improvements
  • Installing guidance and warning signage
  • Upgrading and improving lighting systems

More roadworks

This comes after the Riyadh Municipality announced the opening of the Al-Haer Road bridge at its intersection with Wadi Hanifah as part of projects to enhance the road network and improve traffic efficiency in the south of the capital.

The project included constructing a 170-meter-long, 15-meter-wide bridge with four traffic lanes, in addition to upgrading AlHaer Road to improve traffic flow. It also involved developing a service road from the AlGhannamiyah neighbourhood to connect residents to Al-Haer Road via the bridge, enhancing accessibility and connectivity between neighbouring districts.
