Saudi Traffic Police announces guidelines for driving in the rain
Stay safe
According to recent reports by the National Centre of Meteorology and the Saudi Civil Defence, the adverse weather conditions in Saudi Arabia (rain, hail, and potential flash floods) are expected to continue until the end of this week. To ensure your safety and that of others, the Saudi Traffic Police has announced guidelines for driving in the rain.
Here’s what you need to watch out for.
Check your vehicle’s readiness before hitting the roads
As danger levels are at an all-time high during the rain, it’s best to ensure the vehicle is up-to-date on all maintenance works and fit to be driven on wet roads.
Plan your route ahead of time
Choose the shortest and safest route to your destination before you leave.

Double the safe distance between two vehicles
To prevent accidents and enhance road safety, the guidelines for driving in the rain specify that while driving, you should double the normal safe distance between your vehicle and the one ahead of you on the road.
Reduce your speed
Move slowly so you don’t lose control of your vehicle on wet streets. Vehicles tend to skid on the road as tyre grip and stability decrease during the rain if you drive at high speeds. This is due to the roads being wet and limiting tyre contact with the actual road almost zero, at medium speed, there’s slight tyre contact with the road, while at low speeds, there’s direct contact, making driving that much easier and safer.
Let the vehicle breathe
When driving in the rain, ensure that you have your windows rolled down slightly so that fog doesn’t collect on the windows and the windshield.
Take precautionary measures when passing through locations close to mountains
When passing locations close to mountains or mountain roads (obstacles), as much as possible due to the possibility of rocks falling from them or collapsing. Drive on safe paths and methods that are recommended by the official authorities, and avoid taking risks. Avoid sitting or stopping in the vehicle while travelling in low places or in the stomachs of valleys.
Use appropriate lighting
Turn on your headlights in case of poor visibility and to make your vehicle’s dimensions clear to those around you.
Smooth Steering and Braking
Rain makes roads slippery and unstable; drivers need to drive cautiously during rainfall for prevention and safety.
