The National Museum is hosting a free cultural festival this weekend

Panels, performances, workshops and even an AI-powered museum journey are all part of the line-up

If you haven’t been to the National Museum in a while, this weekend might be your excuse to finally go back. And if, like us, you’re one who loves wandering through galleries, then even better.

To mark International Museum Day 2026, the National Museum of Saudi Arabia is putting on a three-day cultural programme from Thursday May 14 to Saturday May 16. And guess what? It’s completely free.

But don’t expect this to be one of those quiet museum events where everyone whispers and politely stares at artefacts from afar. The programme is shaping up to be far more interactive, with live performances, workshops, musical events, panel talks and debates taking place across the museum.

One of the more interesting additions is an AI-powered “Design Your Journey” experience, where visitors can personalise the way they explore the museum’s collection of more than 3,000 archaeological and heritage artefacts. Very fitting considering Saudi Arabia has declared 2026 the Year of Artificial Intelligence.

Across the three days, the programme will dive into everything from storytelling and language to architecture, identity and the role technology now plays in shaping culture. There’ll also be conversations around traditional performing arts, community spaces and how younger generations are connecting with heritage today.

And no, it’s not all serious panel talk either. Visitors can expect interactive workshops and activities throughout the event, making it genuinely easy to bring the family along.

One session we’d definitely keep an eye on is the student-led debate titled “Which is More Justified?”, where university students will go head-to-head, presenting different perspectives on history and cultural narratives. Expect opinions. Possibly heated ones.

The best part? Entry to both the museum galleries and the International Museum Day programme is free.

So whether you’re heading there for the cultural conversations, the performances, or just fancy doing something in Riyadh that doesn’t involve a mall or brunch, this one’s worth adding to the calendar.
