WhatsApp to stop working on these iPhone and Android phones this week
These are the affected devices
If your mobile phone is on the older side, you might want to check this article to make sure you’re in the clear. Meta-owned messaging giant WhatsApp has revealed that it will no longer support operations on several older operating systems, meaning some users will no longer be able to send messages, make calls, or access chats.

WhatsApp to stop working on these iPhone and Android phones
The update impacts iPhones that can’t run the minimum required software (iOS 15.1 or later). That means the following models will now be unsupported starting on Tuesday May 5.
- iPhone 5
- iPhone 5c
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
These devices can’t be updated to newer iOS versions, which makes them incompatible with the latest version of WhatsApp.
When it comes to Android phones, the following models will be affected starting from September 8:
- Samsung Galaxy S4,
- Samsung Galaxy Note 3
- Sony Xperia Z1
- LG G2
- Huawei Ascend P6
- Moto G (1st Generation)
- Motorola Razr HD
- Moto E (2014)
These devices are not eligible for the latest operating system updates, which, for Android, will now be Android devices using Android 5.0 or older, mkaing them incompatible with the latest version of WhatsApp.
Why is this happening?
Like most major apps, WhatsApp regularly updates its system requirements to keep things secure and running smoothly. Older operating systems can no longer support newer features, encryption updates, or performance improvements.
What happens if your operating system is no longer supported
- The app will stop opening or functioning properly
- You won’t be able to send or receive messages
- Updates and security patches will no longer be available
How to avoid losing your data
If your phone is on the list, here’s what you can do:
- Back up your chats to avoid losing conversations (Settings, tap on Chats, and then select Chat Backup)
- Upgrade your device to continue using WhatsApp
