There are a ton of megaprojects coming to Riyadh in the next few years and one of the four main projects is the Sports Boulevard in Riyadh.
The Sports Boulevard megaproject extends for 135 kilometres, across the city of Riyadh, and is set to include a desert park that covers an area of 20 square kilometres, event venues, a show piazza, and movie theatres. You can also look forward to various coffee shops and retail outlets.
Launched by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman Bin Abdulaziz on 19 March 2019 and will be connecting Hanifah valley in the West with Wadi Al Sulai Valley in the East.
What is the Sports Boulevard?
The project is set to feature special routes for professional and amateur cyclists, horse riding paths, and designated sites for sporting activities, there will also be safe, green pathways for pedestrians. The Sports Boulevard in Riyadh is set to include a desert park that covers an area of 20 square kilometres, event venues, a show piazza, and movie theatres. You can also look forward to various coffee shops and retail outlets.
Part of the Quality-of-Life objective of Saudi Vision 2030, the project aims to promote a healthy lifestyle by encouraging excerising and sports, improve the urban landscape of Riyadh, and transform Riyadh into one of the most livable cities in the world.
Figures
In figures, the Sports Boulevard will have more than 170,000 trees, five iconic destinations, 50 sports facilities and 2.3 million unique districts and investment zones.
Districts
Divided into eight diverse districts, , each with its individual design through pathways and trails, giving a unique experience.
Arts District
Covering a distance of of 5.5 kilometres, from the Diriyah region (west) to Suwaid bin Harthah Road (east), and includes a number of tracks and stops/stations, as well as art buildings and spaces for workshops and cultural and artistic performances.
Wadi AlYasaen
Covering a distance of 4.5 kilometres, from Suwaid bin Harthah Road (west) to Ar Rub Al-Khali Road (east), including a water canal, multiple pathways, bridges, shaded play areas for kids, a kayaking zone, multiple sports fields, and picnic areas.
Entertainment District
Starting from Ar Rub Al-Khali Road (west) to Abi Baker As Siddiq Road (east) and covering an area of three kilometres, this district will feature pathways, a bicycle station, many recreational areas, and an arts complex.
Wadi Hanifah
Covering a distance of 29.5 kilometres from Al Madina Al Munawwarah Road (south) to Al Olab Dam (north) passing through Diriyah Gate, this district will feature pathways for cycling and horse riding, and seven service stations, in addition to various investment zones.
Wadi Al Sulai
Extending a distance of 53 kilometres, King Fahad Stadium (south) to King Salman Park in Banban (north), the district will be complete with tracks and pathways, and a number of service stations.
Red Sand Park
One of the largest districts, Red Sand Park covers an area of over 17 million square meters in the sandy region of King Khalid International Airport (southeast). Designed with traditional Najdi architecture in mind, the area features horse riding trails, pedestrian pathways, hiking and dunes trails, including BMX and cross country biking trails, as well as service stations.
Athletic Districts
The Athletic District will cover a distance of four kilometres, from Abi Baker As Siddiq Road (west) to Airport Road (east), and will include a sports tower, a number of sports courts and fields, in addition to service stations for visitors, and spaces for investment.
Eco Districts
Covering a distance of 15 kilometres from Airport Road (west) to Al Janadriyah Road (east), including cultivation areas and greenhouses, alongside picnic spots, tracks, and multiple stations.
Tower
Ambitious megaprojects are clearly Saudi Arabia’s forté, and recently plans have been unveiled for a massive Global Sports Tower in Saudi Arabia, the tallest one worldwide set to be located in the Athletics District. Standing at 130 meters, and a total internal area of 84,000 square meters, the tower will include more than 30 different sports facilities and the world’s tallest indoor climbing wall at 98 meters.
The tower will also be home to the world’s highest running track with a circuit of 250 meters that offers stunning views of the capital.
Located on Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Road, the tower aims to improve the city’s quality of life, aligning with Vision 2030 goals to make Riyadh a better, more active city by providing world-class facilities that promote sporty culture to all members of society.
