The Riyadh rail link: Saudi Arabia Railways to launch new railway

This just in

After welcoming the Riyadh Metro just last year, it’s just been announced in an exclusive report by MEED that the Saudi Arabia Railways is now looking for contractors to begin construction on the Riyadh rail link.

The Riyadh rail link will run from the north of Riyadh to the south. The scope of the contract is set to encompass the construction of a 35-kilometre-long double-track rail line.

The project is also set to connect SAR’s north-south railway network with the eastern railway network. The Riyadh rail link is expected to become a key component of the Saudi Landbridge railway.

The USD7 billion Saudi Landbridge project is one of the largest infrastructure projects planned for Saudi Arabia. It comprises six lines. The first line involves upgrading the Jubail Industrial City internal network, which is under construction according to MEED.

The second line entails upgrading the Jubail to Dammam railway line, which is also under construction. It will require building a 35-kilometre track. The third line involves upgrading the Dammam to Riyadh railway line, with an 87-kilometre track.

The fourth line, known as the Riyadh rail link, runs from the existing network in the north of the city to the south. It is split into two packages: the first has a 67-kilometre track, and the second has a 35-kilometre track.

The fifth line is a link from Riyadh to Jeddah and then on to King Abdullah Port with three stations at Jamuma, Moya, and Al-Doadmi. The Riyadh to Jeddah line will have a 920-kilometre track, and the Jeddah to King Abdullah Port link will have a 146-kilometre track.

The sixth and final line is a new 172-kilometre line from King Abdullah Port to Yanbu Industrial City.

The start of the construction activity for the Riyadh rail link project makes the construction of the full-scale Saudi Landbridge project even more likely to occur.
