The outdoor barbecue spots in Riyadh list you've been looking for

Come wintertime, Riyadh is the ultimate destination for all things outdoors, especially barbecues. I say that only because my mother asked me for outdoor barbecue spots in Riyadh the other day. So, mom, this one’s for you.
I don’t know about you, but growing up, as soon as the weather shifted, we’d pack up our car (a Prado, if you’re wondering), grab the hordes of family friends we’d made over the years, and head down to any open-air park or wadi that allowed barbecuing to make the most of the weather. It was like clockwork, essentially; the minute Riyadh moms sensed a chill in the air, we’d be marinating meats, cutting up veggies, and making some sort of rice dish to go alongside it. Picture this: sizzling chicken, a chilly nighttime breeze, and the aroma of charcoal taking over the air (I personally love the smell); and that was every winter.
Here are my recommendations for the best outdoor barbecue spots in Riyadh.
Al-Haeer Park Lake

A hidden gem in Riyadh, Al-Haeer Park Lake is a waterfront park located within the historical Al Hair village near Riyadh. An hour’s drive away from Riyadh, the outdoor park invites you to experience a stunning waterfront destination perfect for outdoor grilling and family fun; you can even look forward to feeding the ducks while you’re out there.
Why it’s great: Offers the perfect respite away from the hustle and bustle of the city, without venturing too far away

Wadi Hanifa

Historically known as Wadi al-Arad, Wadi Hanifa is one of the most well-known outdoor parks in the city, even inspiring another similar park to open (I’m looking at you, Shayb Ghudwanah). The area is definitely one of the most frequented this time of year, thanks to its stunning views. The valley runs for a length of 120 kilometres from northwest to southeast, cutting into the capital. The area’s excellent for a family cookout or even a solo adventure.
Why it’s great: There’s a saying that goes, “Old is gold,” and I’d like to think that is true about Wadi Hanifa. It’s well-known, it’s comfortable, and it’s in a lot of my memories, so you know it’s good.

Wadi Namar

This scenic spot is the lesser-known (not to the locals, of course) cousin of Wadi Hanifa. Featuring a gorgeous man-made waterfall, the spot is perfect for picnics, grilling, and just plain unwinding. The perfect spot for an evening stroll, the wadi features several walking trails to get your steps in, too.
Why it’s great: Home to a gorgeous viewpoint, Wadi Namar offers awe-inspiring views of the entire city and the waterfall, too
Location: HM9C+8XM, Namar
Wadi Laban

It may seem like the list is dominated by the many wadis we have, but I swear this is the last one. Nestled on the outskirts of Riyadh, at Wadi Laban, you can look forward to the main wadi trail, scenic overlooks, and birdwatching opportunities. Grab the barbecue equipment and explore green landscapes, serene walking trails, and inviting picnic spots perfect for family gatherings or leisurely afternoons.
Why it’s great: The green landscapes welcome you into a spot perfect for recharging and relaxing
Location: Hijratlaban, 3695
Red Sand Dunes

Located in an area of red desert dunes near Riyadh is a majorly popular destination among Saudis and expats: meet the Red Sand Dunes. Here you can ride ATVs for (SAR50), camels, and horses. Make a day out of it and bring the whole family and dinner under the stars. Note: There are no bathrooms.
Why it’s great: If you’re looking to truly escape Riyadh, this is the perfect place.

Sha’ib Luha Pool BBQ spot
Located a 34-minute drive away from the city centre, the Sha’ib Luha Pool BBQ spot is a natural freshwater pond in Uraidh that offers a natural setting for outdoor activities. Ideal for picnics, hiking, grilling, and camping, the Sha’ib Luha Pool BBQ spot is perfect for family hangouts and is somewhat of a hidden gem.
Why it’s great: It’s the perfect, no-frills spot for barbecue next to natural water (a first on the list)
