Riyadh Parking to launch a major new expansion

Finding parking is about to get easier

After driving in a city that has traffic problems as bad as Riyadh does, no one, and we mean no one, wants to look around for parking too. Now considered a prominent urban challenge that’s actually affecting the city’s quality of life, parking in Riyadh is about to get a major facelift. Here’s what we know about the Riyadh Parking expansion plan.

Currently developing more than 40 municipal land plots into effective, safe, and sustainable parking facilities in partnership with the private sector per AlArabiya, Riyadh Parking is helping address the roots of the challenge through an integrated approach that goes beyond regulating parking.

These include parking lot sites and multi-story parking as well as mechanical parking systems in strategic locations serving high-demand areas, office districts and employment centers, zones surrounding the Riyadh Metro stations, hospitals, car rental activities, truck stops, and more. This expansion represents a fundamental step towards closing the growing demand gap and reducing reliance on on-street parking as the only option.

These facilities are expected to be built across a total area exceeding 600,000 square meters, delivering more than 10,000 new parking spaces. According to studies conducted by Riyadh Parking, once the new facilities are fully operational, the time spent searching for a parking space is expected to drop by up to 45 per cent, and traffic congestion in high-density areas may decrease by up to 10 per cent.

Paid on-street parking helps regulate use and improve compliance; the off-street parking facilities aim to provide added capacity that absorbs growing pressure.

The authority manages over 140,000 parking lots in residential neighbourhoods. Twelve districts, including Al-Wurood, Al-Rahmaniyah, western Al-Olaya, Al-Morouj, King Fahd, and Al-Sulaymaniyah, as well as four southern districts. Launched as a partnership between Remat Al-Riyadh Development Company, the mayoralty’s development arm, and solutions by STC, a leading digital transformation company. The project has already overseen the establishment, management, operation, and maintenance of public parking lots in the capital city.
