You'll soon be able to take the Riyadh Metro from King Saud University to Diriyah
A new extension of the Riyadh Metro’s Red Line is in the works
Getting from King Saud University to Diriyah might soon be as easy as hopping on the Riyadh Metro, thanks to a new Red Line extension.
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has begun construction on two new Riyadh Metro stations located within King Saud University, part of a larger extension of the Red Line that will stretch all the way to to the Diriyah Gate Development Project.

The expansion will add 8.4 kilometres of new track and five additional stations, improving connections between major education and healthcare hubs and some of Riyadh’s most exciting cultural and tourism destinations.
Two of these stations will be located within the King Saud University campus itself.
The first will serve the University Medical City and health colleges, while the second station will connect to the University concourse, making it easier for students, staff and visitors to move around the area.
For residents, the expansion signals a future where some of Riyadh’s most popular destinations are just a metro ride away. Once complete, the extension will bring the historic Diriyah Gate Development Project – home to heritage sites, restaurants, and cultural experiences – much nearer to central Riyadh.
The project is also part of the city’s wider initiative to expand public transport infrastructure. Plans for new metro stations linked to Expo 2030 Riyadh Metro have already been announced, highlighting how the capital is preparing its transport network for future growth and major global events.
For residents, students, and visitors alike, it means that soon you’ll be able to skip the traffic, hop on the metro and ride directly towards Diriyah – making spontaneous heritage strolls, dinners, and weekend plans far easier without relying on the car.
