What Saudi Flag day celebrates and represents in Saudi Arabia
Happy Saudi Flag Day
Today, Wednesday March 11, marks Saudi Flag Day 2026, which is celebrated in honour of the former King Abdulaziz endorsing the flag on March 11, 1937. So if your social feeds are suddenly full of the glorious Saudi flag, read on to find out more.
Formally designated by a 2023 royal decree from Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the day honours a banner that has symbolised the state since its founding in 1727. The flag reflects unity, justice, strength, growth and prosperity.

The Saudi national flag carries a value that extends throughout the history of the Saudi state since its founding in 1139 AH (1727). It represents the testimony of faith and the message of peace and Islam upon which our blessed state was established.
The Components of the Flag and Their Symbolism
The sword in the flag symbolises the display of strength and justice. Its presence beneath the Shahada (Islamic declaration of faith), “There is no god but Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,” and the balance of it represents wisdom and truth. This statement represents the core value of monotheism, upon which the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was founded and continues to stand. The green colour symbolises peace, prosperity, generosity, and tolerance, qualities associated with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
For nearly three centuries, this flag has stood as a witness to the campaigns that unified the lands governed by the Saudi state. It has been adopted by the citizens and people of this nation as a banner of unwavering pride that never falls.
The specifications
The flag is rectangular, with its width equal to two-thirds of its length. Its color is green, extending from the flagpole to the end of the flag. The handle of the sword points toward the lower part of the flag, and the sword is positioned toward the hoist side (near the flagpole).
