Ithra launches its first scientific communication programme in Dhahran

In celebration of International Pi Day on March 14, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, also known as Ithra, launches its first science communication programme, PiCon, in Dhahran.
PiCon provides an opportunity for science and technology enthusiasts to join a series of inspiring dialogues and interactive presentations that stimulate thought and promote creativity and innovation.
There will be scientific riddles and tasks to stimulate audiences’ interest in science and build your cognitive skills.

The five-day programme also takes a hard look at what effective science communication means, especially where the science is uncertain or contested, and how science communicators and experts can increase our knowledge of what works and under what conditions.
Virtual guest speakers include Mishaal Ashemimry, the first aerospace engineer in the GCC, Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space, and theoretical physicist Professor Brian Greene.
Ashemimry will talk about interplanetary travel and provide participants with an overview of the various types of rockets and her experience in developing propulsion systems.
Astronaut Chris Hadfield will focus on space science and his experience with the International Space Station, while Professor Greene will introduce us to the wonders of science.
For those who would like to pursue a career in the space sector, you’ll find tips from rocket propulsion systems specialist Diana Alsindy handy. There will also be a film screening where engineer Rakan Alshaya touches on scientific accuracy in films.
Don’t miss out on the series of interactive experiences, too, where a robot barista will be serving coffee and the “Maestro Robot” playing musical instruments.
