Unesco-listed Al Ula is a destination that is on everyone’s bucket list, especially now that Saudi Arabia is opening up to international tourism.
Previously only open to visitors, photographers and journalists who’ve been granted special access, Al Ula will begin to welcome eager visitors in October. If it seems a long way, explore the beautiful site’s rich heritage on its new virtual platform here.

Using digital technology, the Royal Commission for Al Ula (RCU) has created a virtual tour where visitors can explore the rich heritage of Al Ula right from home.
There are six spots to visit: Dadan, Al Diwan and Jabal Ithlib, Jabal Albanat, Jabal Alahmar, Jabal Ikmah and the jaw-dropping Old Town of Al Ula.
Click on ‘View 360 Experience’ and look around and explore. Markers in the tour will name and explain different spots with text, illustrations, photos and videos – some a minute long. Make sure you take your time as there’s plenty to see and learn.
The move is part of the establishment’s effort to allow the world to see the archaeological site and inform viewers about its history.
According to the Saudi Gazette, cutting edge technology was used which can ‘recreate accurate digital copies and three-dimensional models of small immovable heritage pieces such as inscriptions as well as monuments and large buildings’
Visitors to Al Ula will be able to join guide walks and self-guided treks to the key sites. More adventurous travellers can hit the dunes in a desert buggy, or take to the skies in a light aircraft.
