Watch: Six Senses' stunning resort takes shape on the Red Sea
Six Senses Southern Dunes is one of a number of ultra-luxury hotels to look forward to…
At Saudi Arabia’s gigaprojects, exciting developments happen at a rapid rate. And a new video posted by The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC), shows just how much progress is being made on one of the ultra luxury hotels in phase one of the project: Six Senses Southern Dunes.
One of two inland locations forming part of The Red Sea development, Six Senses Southern Dunes is one of 16 hotels slated for a late 2023 opening. The resort, a landmark for the brand in Saudi Arabia, is nestled within desert mountains and narrow wadis. In true Six Senses style, it’s been designed to honour the local landscape, with a focus on wellness and eco-tourism.
The 76-room resort is split between 36 guest rooms in the main building, and a collection of 40 villas ranging in size from one to four bedrooms are dotted strategically across the peaks to offer panoramic views of the breathtaking natural landscape. In the video posted to Instagram, the unique design of the villas – inspired by the surrounding dunes – is already beginning to take shape. Once complete, each villa will feature an open-plan bedroom and living area, and an outdoor terrace to allow guests to reconnect with nature.

Six Senses Southern Dunes pays homage to the area’s Nabataean heritage and majestic desert surroundings, and is the brainchild of UK design firm Foster + Partners.
Everything will centre around the Oasis, where the hotel reception, lobby, community lounges, and meeting spaces are located. It will also house the hotel’s signature Earth Lab is, an ecology area showcasing their sustainability efforts to reduce consumption, produce locally, and support communities and ecosystems.
The all-day dining restaurant is complemented by a chef’s table and cooking school, along with a juice bar, brew bar, and water bar.
The plan for the Oasis is to gather vibrant activities and functions under one roof, including the reception, lobby lounge, boutique, meeting spaces and prayer rooms, plus a community lounge and Earth Lab. The Artisan Village will host four pods to tell the story of the region’s history and cultural heritage through arts and crafts, dance and music. An all-day dining restaurant is complemented by a chef’s table and cooking school, along with a juice bar, brew bar, and water bar.
A Six Senses Spa promises to be a destination of sumptuous pampering, with a Holistic Anti-Aging Center, male and female grooming centers and indoor zones with wet facilities, sensory suite, plus outdoor treatment cabanas with a relaxation area.
The Red Sea hotels to look forward to
The Red Sea Project’s first phase of development is on track for completion by the end of 2023, with a total of 16 hotels set to offer 3,000 hotel rooms across five islands and two inland sites.
On Shaura Island, expect luxury hotel openings from EDITION, Grand Hyatt, Fairmont, Jumeirah, InterContinental and SLS, each bringing its own signature style and design. On a separate island called Ummahat Island, St Regis Red Sea Resort will be a very exciting opening in the first phase. The private island resort will feature 90 villas, two signature restaurants, an outdoor pool, fitness centre, spa, and a children’s club.
