Explore one of Saudi Arabia’s most recognisable destinations…

As Saudi Arabia opens its doors to tourists, there’s one destination that’s become synonymous with the kingdom’s bucket-list sights: Al Ula.

The desert outpost, 1,040 kilometres northwest of Riyadh, was part of the ancient Incense Trade Route, connecting the Mediterranean to North Africa and South East Asia.

Up until now, international tourism in Saudi Arabia has been limited, which means these mesmerising sights haven’t been overrun. Even now with tourist visas available, group sizes are being kept to a minimum, so you may just have these incredible scenes all to yourself…

A maze of mud houses, laneways and tombs carved into rock form this ancient desert city, which was built by the Nabataeans between the first century BC and the first century AD. The archaeological site was the first in Saudi Arabia to be added to the Unesco World Heritage List, and it is a must-visit on any trip to the kingdom.

The largest Nabataean tomb in the Madain Saleh complex, this giant carved rock towers above the desert landcape. It’s fast become one of Saudi Arabia’s most recognisable – and most photographed – sights.

During the Winter at Tantora festival, you can spend the night in a vintage RV within the canyons of Al Ula. The camp will close on March 7, but hopes to reopen for visitors from October.
